On 2 August 2022, a regular meeting of the Council of the Holy Metropolis of Abkhazia was held. Archimandrite Dorotheos (Dbar), Chairman of the HMA Council, 1st Deputy Chairman of the HMA Council, Abbot of the New Athos Monastery, Hierodeacon David (Sarsania), Secretary of the HMA Council Germain Marchand, members of the HMA Council Ruslan Pandaria, Omar Trapsh, Miron Chalmaz, Timur Dzidzaria , Alkhas Tkhagushev (on-line), Akhra Argun and Dionysus Yalanchidi were present at the meeting.
Several issues were discussed on the agenda of the meeting.
1. The Chairman of the Council of HMA acquainted the members of the Council with the letter received in his name – a summon to the church court in the Maikop Eparchy of the Russian Orthodox Church. He explained his position of refusing to travel to Maikop, explaining that he was a provincial cleric of the Gumenis Metropolis of the Greek Orthodox Church.
During the discussion, all participants of the meeting expressed their views and it was decided to form a group of delegates from the HMA for a dialogue with authorized representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church on the issue of finding a way to solve the current problem (interpretation of the canonical subordination of Archimandrite Dorotheos (Dbar)), according to the church principle of economy i.e., according to the principal of condescension and benefit for the Orthodox flock of Abkhazia. The decision was taken unanimously.
2. The issue of convocation of the 3rd Church-People’s Assembly. On 8 June 2021, a meeting of HMA Council was held in New Athos, on its agenda there was also the issue of holding the III Church-People’s Assembly. Due to Covid-19 pandemic and related quarantine restrictions in the Republic of Abkhazia, the next Church-People’s Assembly was postponed to October 2021. The powers of the current convocation of the HMA Council were extended until the convocation of the next Church-People’s Assembly. The Chairman of the Council of HMA proposed to hold the next, III Church-People’s Assembly in October of this year. After the discussion of this issue, the members of HMA Council decided not to choose an exact date for the Church-People’s Assembly in connection with the next outbreak of Covid-19 infection in Abkhazia.
