Ruslan Sarsaniya was born on January 31, 1978 in the town of Gudauta. In 1982 he was baptized in the Church of the Intercession of Theotokos in Gudauta.
Finished high school in the village of Bambora in 1995.
In 1994 entered the Moscow Theological Seminary. In 1998 entered the Moscow Theological Academy. During the study at Academy he was tonsured as monk in the Georgian Orthodox Church.
He was ordained by Bishop Andrey (Gvazava) in the Zion Cathedral.
On 14 May, 2000 fr. David was ordained a hierodiacon by Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II in the Didube Church of Our Holy Lady.
From 2000 to 2005 he was in the diaconal ministry in the temples of Moscow.
In 2002 entered the Graduate School of the Moscow Theological Academy.
In 2003, with the blessing of Smolensk and Kaliningrad Metropolitan-Kirill fr.David entered the Bossey Ecumenical Institute (Switzerland).
From October 2003 to February 2004 he was in the diaconal ministry in the temple of the Nativity of Theotokos in Geneva (Switzerland).
In May 2005, fr. David studied German at the Institute of Oriental Churches in Regensburg (Germany).
Then with the blessing of Smolensk and Kaliningrad Metropolitan-Kirill fr.David entered the University of Fribourg (Switzerland), studied Doctoral program at the faculty of Theology. From April 2006 to June 2010 he carried out the diaconal ministry as a freelance cleric in the Church of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ in Zurich (Switzerland).
In February 6, 2006 the Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church was accused David Sarsaniya of anti-Catholic and anticanonical activities, directed against the Georgian Orthodox Church.
The Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church brought a charge against fr.David after his public speech about the impossibility of the Orthodox flock of Abkhazia being the part of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
In the 27th of March, 2006 fr.David sent a letter to the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II. In the letter he requested for dismissal from the staff of the Georgian Orthodox Church Clergy with right to go to the Russian Orthodox Church Clergy. David Sarsaniya received an official refusal.
From July 2010 to September 2013 he lived and served in Agiou Pavlou (Saint Paul’s) monastery in the monastic state of Mount Athos (Greece). Fr.David studied the traditions of Svjatogorsk monasticism there.
On May 15, 2011 he took part in the Church National Assembly, New Athos and was elected as a member of the newly formed HMA. On January 9, 2012 the delegation of HMA was at the meeting with Archbishop of Constantinople and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. They discussed the issue of the Abkhazian Church.
Since October 2, 2013 fr. David is an abbot of the monastery of St. Apostle Simon the Canaanees in New Athos (Abkhazia). Since July 2015 he has delivered lecturers at the Theological Lectorium in the New Athos Monastery. Hierodiakon David speaks Abkhazian, Russian, English, German, Modern Greek, Serbian fluently.
