On 22-25 September 2022, an international scientific conference “Christianity in the North Caucasus: history, culture, modern society” was held in Vladikavkaz, dedicated to the 1100th anniversary of the baptism of Alania.
The conference was held in the assembly hall of the North Ossetian Institute of Humanitarian and Social Research named after. V. I. Abaev of the Vladikavkaz Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The conference was attended by scientists and researchers from various regions of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Abkhazia and the Republic of Armenia.
At the opening of the conference, greeting addresses were made by the Head of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania S. I. Menyaylo, Bishop Gerasim of Vladikavkaz and Alania, Rector of the North Ossetian State University A. U. Ogoev and Head of the Vladikavkaz Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences A. L. Chibirov.
Doctor of Theology, leading researcher at the department of history of Abkhazian Institute for Humanitarian Researches named after D. Gulia ANA, Archimandrite Dorotheos (Dbar) made a report “Letters of the Patriarch of Constantinople St. Nicholas I Mystikos to the Abkhazian kings and Christianization of the Alans” at the plenary session.
The conference was held as part of the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the baptism of Alania. The conference participants also attended the National Museum of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, where an exhibition of Alanian Christian relics from the Hermitage collection was displayed. In addition, the participants visited an art exhibition dedicated to the 1100th anniversary of the baptism of Alania, held at the Art Museum of M. S. Tuganova.
On 25 September, a trip to the Kurtatinsky Gorge was organized for the guests of the conference, where they got acquainted with the historical and architectural Ossetian monuments, including the village of Tsymyti, known for its Ossetian military and residential towers, crypts and other cultural monuments, as well as the Alanian Holy Dormition Monastery in the village of Hidicus.
