Mokva Cathedral needs urgent repairs

On 4 February, 2019 the abbot of the monastery of St. Apostle Simon the Canaanite Hierodeacon David (Sarsania) visited the Mokva Cathedral in Mokva, Ochamchyra district.

During the trip, the abbot also visited the Mokva Cathedral in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The cathedral is in a poor condition. It is a part of the architectural heritage of Abkhazia.

In particular, the roof, the masonry of the upper part of the central apse (from the north-east side), stormwater drainage systems, window frames are damaged, the cathedral walls are overgrowing with moss and mold (inside and out).

The Holy Metropolis of Abkhazia is appealing to the public and competent authorities of the Republic of Abkhazia to examine the current condition of the Mokva cathedral and to takr urgent measures in order to save the monument of the historical and cultural heritage of Abkhazia.
