On 1 November, 2018, the Chairman of the Council of the Holy Metropolis of Abkhazia, Archimandrite Dorotheos (Dbar) participated in the opening of the office of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Abkhazia. The opening of the office was held at the National Library of I.G. Papaskiri, where a round table was simultaneously held.
Archimandrite Dorotheos (Dbar) noted the following thing in his short speech: “The current generation of Abkhazians does not recreate the institutions of the Abkhazian Kingdom, the Abkhazian Principality, the Abkhazian SSR or the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, which regulated their life in accordance with the rules and conditions of their time. The modern generation is building, as it is written in the constitution of our republic, an independent democratic state, which is unthinkable without the protection of human rights. We cannot live according to Nomocanon (Byzantine collections of church rules and imperial decrees) or Sharia. The silencing, ignoring or concealing of problems always exacerbates their negative consequences. The institution of the Human Rights has a special mission for our society, in recent years we have witnessed the flourishing of archaic, primitive living arrangements, the abandonment of complex forms of behavior and decision-making. At the same time, refusing the development, we calling it traditions and a manifestation of the moral and ethical norms of Apsuara. It is not necessary to remind cases of lynching on the basis of marriage and family relations in recent years. In these cases, it seems to me, victims cannot be protected by the existing state and public institutions. The only hope of these people is the systematic work of the institution of the Commissioner for Human Rights. I wish good luck to the office of Commissioner for Human Rights in its activity in Abkhazia. ”
