The solemn, opening ceremony of commemorative plaque in the New Athos Monastery

On 7 November 2019, the solemn, opening ceremony of commemorative plaque was held in the New Athos Monastery. The commemorative plaque is dedicated to the hardworking physicians and the entire staff of the New Athos military hospital.

During the Patriotic war of Abkhazian people, from 7 November 1992 to 3 October 1993, a military hospital was located in the building of the monastery of St. Apostle Simon the Canaanite in New Athos.

The establishment of a commemorative plaque started in 2015, the initiators were Lev Argun (during the Patriotic war of Abkhazian people in 1992-1993 he was the head of the medical service of the front of the Athos-Sukhum direction and the New Athos military hospital, Member of the Office of the Medical Service of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Abkhazia) and Archimandrite Dorotheos (Dbar), (Chairman of the Council of the Holy Metropolis of Abkhazia).

The project was approved by the Assembly of New Athos city (decision No. 10 of 03.15.2015). At the meeting on 22 February 2017, the State Commission on Monumental Art under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Abkhazia approved this project with amendments in the text of the inscription on the commemorative plaque.

Before the opening ceremony at the memorial cemetery located near the walls of the New Athos Monastery, Archimandrite Dorotheos (Dbar) and Hierodeacon David (Sarsaniya) held a memorial service. Then there was the ceremony of laying flowers on the graves of perished soldiers. At 12:00, at the main entrance of the New Athos Monastery, the opening ceremony of the commemorative plaque began.

At the solemn opening ceremony there were invited Lev Argun, Honored Doctor of the Republic of Abkhazia, holder of the Order of Leon, during the Patriotic war of Abkhazian people in 1992-1993 he was the head of the medical service of the front of the Athos-Sukhum direction and the New Athos Military Hospital, member of the Office of the Medical Service of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Abkhazia and Isolda Chanturia-Argun, during the Patriotic War of 1992-1993 was the head nurse of the New Athos military hospital.

The sketch of the commemorative plaque was prepared by the Publishing Department of the Holy Metropolis of Abkhazia. The plaque was made of marble by order of HMA, modelled after the pre-revolutionary commemorative plaques placed on the facade of the cathedral church of the New Athos Monastery. The commemorative inscription on the plaque is made in Abkhaz, Russian and English.

In 2008, by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh (No. 173 24 September, 2008) the New Athos military hospital was awarded the highest military award of the Republic of Abkhazia – the Order of Leon. This award is also depicted on the commemorative plaque.

Speakers at the ceremony: Archimandrite Dorotheos (Dbar); Timur Akhba (in 1992-1993 the head of the Administration of New Athos); Felix Dautia (Head of the Administration of New Athos currently); Lev Argun; Otar Osiya (in 1992-1993, the Head of the Medical Service of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Abkhazia, Minister of Health of RA); Vyacheslav Argun (in 1992-1993 was the head of the surgical department of the New Athos military hospital); Apollon Shinkuba (Chairman of the Council of Elders of the Republic of Abkhazia, Hero of Abkhazia, was among the patients of the New Athos military hospital in 1992-1993), Aslan Avidzba (deputy director of the Abkhazian Institute named after D. Gulia, doctor of historical sciences, compiler of the book “Medical Service of the Republic of Abkhazia 1992-1993”); Oleg Ragimov (in 1992-1993 was one of the patients of the New Athos military hospital).

At the end, all participants of the event were invited to a banquet at the refectory of the New Athos Monastery, they were shown archival photos and videos about the activities of the New Athos military hospital.
